Universit\u00e0 degli Studi di Roma Tor Vergata<\/em><\/p>\n

I<\/span>l mio intervento intende presentare la figura e l\u2019opera di Michele Gigli (1790-1837), avvocato, filantropo, maestro, considerato il fondatore delle scuole notturne romane. Agli inizi dell\u2019Ottocento, l\u2019Urbe vantava numerose scuole per l\u2019istruzione popolare e istituzioni per l\u2019assistenza, l\u2019educazione, l\u2019avvio ad un mestiere di poveri e orfani. Molti fanciulli, per\u00f2, erano di fatto esclusi da questo percorso formativo perch\u00e9 occupati durante il giorno nelle botteghe artigiane come garzoni e apprendisti. Nelle ore serali e nei giorni festivi, inoltre, venivano lasciati a\u00a0<\/span>se<\/span>\u00a0stessi nelle strade e nelle bettole, esposti a pericoli e cattivi esempi.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le scuole notturne nacquero proprio per contrastare le condizioni di disagio morale, educativo e sociale dei giovani artigiani. La prima scuola, limitata nei mezzi e nell\u2019organizzazione e circoscritta nel numero di partecipanti (docenti e alunni), fu aperta da Giacomo\u00a0<\/span>Casoglio<\/span>\u00a0(1749-1823).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Michele Gigli diede un impulso decisivo a questo iniziale progetto avviando altre scuole e fondando il\u00a0<\/span>Pio Istituto delle Scuole Notturne di Religione,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0un\u2019associazione di benefattori destinata ad avere un notevole sviluppo negli anni successivi, grazie a personalit\u00e0 eminenti del panorama educativo romano, come l\u2019abate Vincenzo Pallotti e monsignor Carlo Luigi\u00a0<\/span>Morichini<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

L\u2019opera del Gigli per la promozione della crescita sociale, umana e culturale dei fanciulli romani si \u00e8 concretizzata nei primi decenni del XIX secolo, ma ha continuato a fiorire negli anni successivi. L\u2019eredit\u00e0 del Gigli \u00e8 testimoniata, da un lato, dalla diffusione delle scuole notturne a Roma e nello Stato Pontificio, prima e dopo l\u2019Unit\u00e0, come evidenziato negli studi di Roberto Sani e Giovanni Vigo; dall\u2019altro, dalla stampa coeva che, dopo la prematura scomparsa del filantropo, ne ha tramandato la memoria come fulgido esempio di abnegazione, operosit\u00e0 e carit\u00e0 cristiana.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Le scuole notturne furono un\u2019esperienza per certi aspetti innovativa perch\u00e9 destinate ad una\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>utenza<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0dimenticata, ma si inserirono appieno nell\u2019alveo della tradizione educativa ottocentesca perch\u00e9 volte principalmente alla formazione cristiana dei\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>figli del popolo<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
