On September 30th, 2025, Professor Roberto Mavilia presented the paper “The Control Paradox in High-Crime Environments: Empirical Evidence from Italian SMEs”, co-authored with Professor Salvatore Loprevite and Dott. Marco Spadaro at the ALTEC Chile 2025 Conference in Santiago. He discussed how organized crime influences corporate governance and internal control systems in Italian SMEs — showing that, paradoxically, firms in high-crime areas tend to weaken rather than strengthen their control structures.
