A powerful unified separation-science tool\u00a0Produced through collaboration between Shimadzu,\u00a0<\/em>Chromaleont, and the University of Messina.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n The 5D Ultra-e is a unified system that combines comprehensive\u00a0two-dimensional gas chromatograph and triple quadrupole\u00a0mass spectrometer\/flame ionization detector with an HPLC\u00a0system connected online. The instrument can be used in seven\u00a0different combinations ranging from one-dimensional HPLC\u00a0with a photodiode array detector to on-line LC\u00d7GC\u00d7GCQqQ\u00a0MS\/FID. In the latter configuration, it is possible to\u00a0set different LC, PTV, GC\u00d7GC, and QqQ MS conditions\u00a0during the same run. The online HPLC system enhances the\u00a0power of comprehensive GC\u00d7GC analysis and simultaneously\u00a0improves productivity by increasing automation. Furthermore,\u00a0GC\u00d7GC system combined with an ultra fast triple quadrupole\u00a0mass spectrometer allows both untargeted analysis as well\u00a0as targeted analysis of components in complex samples. The\u00a05D Ultra-e was developed with the principal involvement of\u00a0Luigi Mondello (University of Messina) and Mariosimone\u00a0Zoccali (Chromaleont).\u00a0Potential impact\u00a0The on-line nature of the system, compared to off-line\u00a0approaches (e.g., LC\/\/GC\u00d7GC, solid-phase extraction\/\/GC\u00d7GC), reduces the risks of sample contamination,\u00a0improves run-to-run precision, and enables the setting of\u00a0batch-type applications, increasing laboratory productivity.\u00a0The system can be used in a variety of configurations,\u00a0depending on the specific analytical requirements. Practically\u00a0all of the requirements of any GC-based application can be\u00a0covered along the line of the possible operational modes.\u00a0What the judges say: \u201cMany food and life-science samples are extremely complex and\u00a0<\/em>no single chromatographic method can separate them.
